R & D Department Report

I have been deep into research & development mode. I am super excited about the progress I am making on new designs, though the going is slow. The mobiles I am working on are deceptive in their simplicity. So much time and effort goes into developing and perfecting the final design. Countless hours are spent experimenting with colors, shapes and materials. Dozens of prototypes are constructed before the final design and production methods are settled upon.

I am behind schedule with this new collection. I had hoped to have new work up on my new website design by now.....but I am learning that it is ok to take the necessary time to get things just right. I am learning not to rush. I am pushing to make things as perfect as possible. I think it will be worth the wait.

A few weeks ago, Celia, the author of the blog Hank and Lucy posted about wanting a Sunshine mobile for her nursery. You can read the post here. She was uncertain about making the investment herself and also about putting it on her baby shower registry.

In the end she did put it on her registry and one of her lovely friends gave it to her as a gift.

This morning she sent me an email that made my day! Her words are so kind and touching...she agreed to let me share them here on my blog. Thank you Celia!

thank you so much for your comment. i did end up putting the mobile on my registry and one of my very dear friends gave it to me this past weekend. i kid you not, i cried when i opened the package. it's funny to think that i got more emotional over one of your mobiles than i did over any other gift. i REALLY do think your pieces are worth the price (if not more), but we just aren't currently in the position to be buying it ourselves (babies cost A LOT of money). if i didn't get it at my shower, i was going to forgo the whole mobile idea for a few months and wait until we could buy it. i had seen other similar pieces, but they didn't compete and i knew i would be so sad if i "settled". anyway, i am the happiest girl now that we have it and i can't wait to hang it up. i'll be posting pictures on the blog, so i'll make sure to forward you the link.

Ok, so this is the first time I have posted about

FASHION.

Why?

Because everybody does it.

It's not that I don't follow it and love it.

It's just that even before it happens it feels so done.

But, what the hell.

I'm feeling free and alive tonight so here is my 2 cents.

I have never been a fan of Phillip Lim until now.

I loved the collection because it looks so wearable, luxurious and chic.

If I could buy one piece, this dress would be it.

Why?

Because it hides the flaws baby.

And at this stage of life

that is everything.

Lots of Knots

I'm slowly working my way through a 100 piece order for a Canadian retailer. To mentally distract myself from the monotony I decided to count the number of knots I tie per mobile. Each small mobile has 179 knots and 71 paper shapes that are individually die cut by hand. The production process is similar to jewelry making. Meticulous attention to detail, skill and patience are required. They are truly a labor of love. Start to finish each mobile takes about 1.5 hours to complete. Crazy.

Counting the number of knots in each mobile got me to thinking about all that goes into the making of the mobiles. Which got me to thinking about all things production and pricing and the difference between things that are artist made versus things that are produced in a factory. And about why hand made artist goods are more expensive than factory produced goods and why they are worth the investment. Honestly, I think about these things constantly and I could go on and on about the topic....but I must return to mobile making!

So I will just say this: I think the thing that is special about handmade goods and what makes them worth the extra investment is that ineffable quality that comes from the creativity and imagination and well, soul and feeling of the maker. That special something that attracts you to the thing... that would be lost if the thing were inexpensively produced in a factory on an assembly line.

I also want to say thank you to those of you that understand, embrace and support small businesses and artists that are producing special, hand made, high quality goods. Thank you for understanding why they are worth investing in. THANK YOU!

Stumbling upon these frazier & wing mobiles in the window of a boutique in Ballard!

Eating butter laden croissants and quiches at Cafe Besalu with my sweet husband. That's him, the smiling guy above!

Dinner at Delancey. I have been on a quest for the perfect pizza spot and Delancey delivered. How I wish it were in Portland.

Breakfast at Local 360. Fantastic eggs, bacon and an Americano just the way I like it...strong!

Meyer Lemon ice cream at Molly Moon's.

A bit of shopping at Totokaelo.

And a quick visit to Flora & Henri. Their children's clothes are just perfection. I wish they had a women's collection.

I'm in trouble! I have relapsed and given in to my vintage treasure hunting addiction. I had sworn off it for a good while.....but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Plus, I will use them as photo props one day, so I can justify the purchases. Right?

How sweet is this little lady at top? It's a hand painted music box with little birds and a girl that twirls around. Just makes me happy.

That's right! Woo hoo! I am excited to finally share the results of a collaboration I have been working on for the past few months. Frazier & Wing mobiles and garlands designed and produced exclusively for the fantastic DwellStudio.

About a year ago I contacted Christiane Lemieux, the creative director of DwellStudio to let her know that I was getting quite a few requests to create custom mobiles to go with DwellStudio kids and baby prints. I asked her if she would be interested in discussing a possible collaboration and she said yes! Just like that, yes!

So we set to work and here is what we have come up with. The mobiles and garlands are available to purchase exclusively at DwellStudio.com.

(I think more pictures will be coming to their site soon as new product that the mobiles have been photographed with are launched. )

I love, love, love this notebook by Astier De Villatte. I have it sitting by my desk. It makes me very happy. The edges of the paper are painted in gold. The little pink glass vase is a recent vintage find. I am in a non-accumulation phase big time...but a delicate vintage pink glass vase is just impossible to pass up. Note by Note is a documentary film about the year long process of the making of a Steinway piano. My husband and I watched it last night and let me tell you, this is an inspiring movie. I loved everything about it. It made me so happy to see artisans and craftsmen and women making this amazing instrument by hand....right here in the USA. Beautiful.

I like this personal stationary for the clean and clever use of typography and because my father's name was Truman. I loved him and his name. My first gallery installation! Jane Beebe of PDX Contmemporary Art invited me to make a piece for their Window Project. These are some quick pics I snapped yesterday after installing the mobile. "Antidote" will be on view 24 hours a day (the window project faces the street so it is always "open") through the end of April at PDX Contemporary Art in Portland, Oregon. These are a few of the new garland designs that have just gone up on my site. Due to a re-design and quicker production method the garlands are now only $20 each! I really wanted to offer a little something in my collection that brings a lot of happiness and satisfaction for just a little bit of money. The garlands are 6 feet long and come in 10 color combinations. Custom lengths and colors can be ordered for your wedding, party or other festive event.
